Since then, the Steampunk awareness folks have realized many classic anachronistic science fiction conveniently fit into this genre. ![]() Jeter is credited with using “Steampunk” in the 1980s as a variant of cyberpunk (postmodern science fiction genre noted for its focus on high tech and low life). ![]() While some folks find that trivia interesting, you don’t have to know that to like Rock and Roll music. As early as 1942, the term was used in Billboard magazine to describe Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s Rock Me recording. He does this and everybody yells.”Įlvis didn’t invent Rock and Roll. ![]() Not everyone of the 60 million watching understood Elvis when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956.Įd Sullivan said, “I can’t figure this darn thing out. The key element of Steampunk is anachronism.Īnachronism is an perceptional error in chronology, especially a misplacing of persons, events, objects, or customs in regard to each other. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, traditionally featuring steam-powered machinery–as in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen–but not always as in Back to the Future. ![]()

There was fiery rhetoric on both sides of the Mason/Dixon, and it was kind of scandalous for a Yankee and a Southron to be hanging out. ![]() Even prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War, tensions ran high between the North and the South. Their friendship isn’t without struggle though. Though Orry hails from a slave-owning plantation in South Carolina and George’s family owns an iron company in Pennsylvania, the two strike a fast friendship. Orry Main and George Hazard meet as cadets at West Point in the 1840s. ![]() (I love you, vacation days!) North and South begins a trilogy of books that tell the epic tale of the Mains and the Hazards. ![]() Family scandal and treachery will do that to you… As well as vacation days. Weighing in at 812 pages, I was shocked to get through it in less than a week. She was all, “Katie, it’s like if The Pillars of the Earth was set during the Civil War.” And I was all, “Ooooooh, that sounds wonderful.” Technically, I finished this after midnight on New Year’s Eve, so I’m going to say it counts as my first official read of 2014. Takaki wurde an der University of California, Los Angeles Dozent und unterrichtete als erster dort über die Geschichte der Schwarzen (Black History). Seine Doktorarbeit befasste sich mit der Sklaverei in Amerika und den dieser zugrundeliegenden Vorstellungen und wurde später als Buch veröffentlicht.Īkademische Laufbahn Seinen Bachelorabschluss im Fach Geschichte machte er 1961 gefolgt von einem Master 1962 und seiner Promotion 1967 an der University of California, Berkeley. Als einer der wenigen asiatischen Studenten auf dem College of Wooster in Ohio wurde er mit dem Problem des rassisch Anders-Seins konfrontiert, was seine Zukunftspläne beeinflusste.
